Dr. Brian Waterman Moderates International Expert Session on Complex Shoulder Instability in Elite Athletes at SECEC Conference in the Netherlands

Posted on: August 18th, 2025 by Our Team

Rotterdam, the Netherlands – At the 2025 SECEC (Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery) Congress, scheduled to take place from 17 to 19 September 2025 in Rotterdam, Dr. Brian Waterman of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, USA, will serve as chair and moderator for a distinguished Instructional Course Lecture (ICL) entitled “Open and Arthroscopic Management of Complex Shoulder Instability in the High‑Demand Athlete.”

This advanced session promises a comprehensive, case‑based exploration of shoulder instability, focusing on uni‑directional, bi‑directional, and multi‑directional presentations in elite and high‑demand athletes. Dr. Waterman will guide participants through a rigorous evaluation of clinical features—highlighting key aspects of physical examination and radiographic imaging—that shape clinical decision‑making and surgical planning.

Within the panel’s interactive framework, expert faculty will examine cutting‑edge surgical techniques. These include arthroscopic capsulolabral repair, remplissage, open Bankart procedures, arthroscopic and open Latarjet reconstruction, bone block augmentation, and dynamic anterior stabilization strategies.

Dr. Waterman himself will take the platform to address “The lost art of the physical examination and radiographic evaluation of the unstable shoulder,” reinforcing the continued relevance of foundational diagnostic skills alongside advanced imaging. Contributing to the session’s depth are world‑renowned colleagues: Philipp Moroder (Switzerland) emphasizing classic arthroscopic and open soft‑tissue stabilization techniques; Ruth Delaney (Ireland) debating the merits of open versus arthroscopic Latarjet with screws versus buttons; and Stephen Parada (USA) presenting innovations in free bone block augmentation using distal tibia, scapular spine, clavicle, and other graft sources.

This ICL embodies SECEC’s mission to present peer-reviewed, evidence-driven, and clinically relevant education that blends surgical dexterity, sound clinical judgment, and practical expertise. As shoulder and elbow professionals gather in Rotterdam, this session stands as a highlight, offering invaluable insights into the management of complex instability in the athlete population.
