Dr. Brian Waterman Speaks at AMECRA Annual Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico

Dr. Brian Waterman recently joined orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine specialists from around the world at the XXX International Congress of the Mexican Association of Reconstructive Joint Surgery and Arthroscopy (AMECRA) in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Held June 3–6, 2026, the annual congress offered an international forum for sharing advances in arthroscopy, joint reconstruction, and sports medicine. The program brought together respected specialists for lectures, instructional courses, clinical case discussions, and conversations about emerging approaches to treating joint and athletic injuries.

Dr. Waterman contributed to the scientific program through multiple presentations focused on complex injuries affecting throwing athletes, as well as contemporary strategies for preserving and reconstructing the knee.

Latissimus Dorsi and Teres Major Tendon Injuries in Elite Throwers

One of Dr. Waterman’s presentations examined injuries involving the latissimus dorsi and teres major tendons in elite throwing athletes. Although these injuries are relatively uncommon, they can significantly affect the strength, velocity, and control required for high-level throwing.

His presentation addressed the evaluation of these challenging injuries and the factors physicians must consider when choosing between nonoperative care and surgical treatment. For elite athletes, an individualized plan is essential to support healing while meeting the substantial physical demands of returning to competition.

Posterior Throwing Injuries in Athletes

Dr. Waterman also discussed posterior throwing injuries, a group of conditions that can cause pain and impaired performance in overhead athletes. Repetitive high-velocity throwing places tremendous stress on the shoulder, making an accurate diagnosis especially important.

The presentation explored the complex mechanics behind these injuries and the importance of evaluating the athlete’s entire throwing motion. Treatment may involve rehabilitation, workload modification, attention to movement mechanics, or surgery when appropriate.

Preserving the Knee Meniscus

A separate presentation focused on knee meniscus preservation. The meniscus plays an essential role in distributing forces across the knee, supporting joint stability, and protecting articular cartilage. Whenever clinically appropriate, preserving healthy meniscal tissue may help maintain knee function and reduce the risk of degenerative changes over time.

Dr. Waterman highlighted modern approaches to meniscal treatment, including advanced repair and biologic strategies designed to preserve as much functional tissue as possible. This philosophy is particularly important for athletes and active patients who place significant demands on their knees.

Advances in ACL Reconstruction

Dr. Waterman’s presentations also included anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, reconstruction. ACL injuries are common among athletes participating in sports that require cutting, pivoting, jumping, or rapid changes in direction.

Successful reconstruction involves more than replacing the injured ligament. Graft selection, surgical technique, associated knee injuries, rehabilitation, and return-to-sport testing can all influence a patient’s recovery. Dr. Waterman addressed these important considerations and the individualized decision-making required to help patients return safely to activity.

Supporting International Collaboration in Sports Medicine

Participation in the AMECRA Congress provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge with orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine professionals from Mexico and other countries. International meetings such as this one help specialists compare clinical experiences, examine evolving evidence, and advance the care of athletes and active patients.

Dr. Waterman’s involvement reflects his continued commitment to education, research, and collaboration in orthopedic sports medicine. By sharing expertise in throwing-related injuries, meniscus preservation, and ACL reconstruction, he contributed to an important international discussion about improving treatment and long-term outcomes for patients with complex sports injuries.
